Is this the first public memorial for Octavia Butler? Her writing really influenced the way that I see the world. She was a great writer.
Thank you for posting this information.
I was just 19 years old when I read "kindred". I will never forget the words that I wept over. Wish I could say that I read another of her writings. However, I was fulfilled with the one I read!
Thank you for posting this info. I'm not going to be able to make it though. Will it be recorded or broadcast live?
I've read "Wildseed" and "Mind of my Mind" about three times each!!!!....I've always considered her the Toni Morrison of science fiction.
We will do our best to video it and post the video on this blog afterwards. I think Octavia would like the location. She had corresponded with me expressing her desire to come to speak at our annual workshop on geoethical nanotechnology. However, she noted that she was not feeling that well just then (about 2004). The location of her memorial gazes out over an ocean of trees onto the Presidential Range of the Green Mountains of Vermont. We really welcome people to come to express their feelings and/or learnings about Octavia Butler's deeply penetrating writings.
I love Octavia... her stories started powerful assertive women who were survivors, not victims. We need more writers like her. Parable of the Sower changed my life. R.I.P. Octavia, I wish I could go.
I don't understand the connection to Vermont? Wish I could be there, her writings continue to have a huge influence on my life!
I alway wanted to meet her, speak with her, I have many questions, my heart is very heavy, Thank you for posting this information I saw it on Facebook...I'll pass info on. Again Thank you so much feels like I lost a family member.
I Give total respect to the MIND! the VISIONS! and the MEMORY of OCTAVIA BUTLER.I have LOVED Science Fiction since childhood, and I was not aware until Adulthood that there were African American Writers in this FIELD...until I read PATTERN MASTER!REST IN PEACE O.B.Randy Morrison
She was amazing. Thank you for this.
She WAS amazing. I still use "All that we touch, we change." as one of my mantras. I am happy to have had the pleasure of meeting Octavia at a bookstore in Los Angeles several years ago. Thank you. Looking forward to seeing the video of the ceremony.
This is great! I am glad to see her being honored and hope that the event and monument will be available via Virtual Tour on Facebook.
all that you touch, you change. all that you change, changes you.her spirit lives.i wish i could be there for this! thank you for doing this. it is more than deserved.
A gifted writer, very very missed.
Truly wish that I could join in honoring this great one. May we experience more creative souls to spark our imaginations and to help us see the seeds that we are planting and where they might lead us.
I love Octavia Butler. Wish I could attend in person but will be there in spirit.
I have read every one of her books except the two that are no longer in print. Very deep... her work is original and before its time. I am glad to know that someone is honoring her name. I remember the first book I read; it was so intriguing that I completed it in a day. The next day I went out to find more. I love Sci-fy and will miss Ms. Butler.
It was a bitter sweet moment when I finished the very last book available...put forth from her hands, heart, and soul. I wish I was around when she first began her journey. Is continuously missed when I think about everything that could have come from her, however I am glad for her creativity and limitless imagination she blessed us with! ~From a lifelong reader and future Librarian
Kindred was unique and unforgettable. One of the most influential and significant books I have ever read. Currently capping my top-100 books at the #1 position ...for the past 5 years and holding! If you have not read it, you should. If you have read it ...read it again. Then lend your copy to a friend or bookcross it (look up bookcrossing).
I was given the book "Wildseed" when I was 15 from my older sister and was hooked. I have read all her books at least two times, some three. Octavia Butler was a truly gifted author as well as a visionary. She will always be my favorite.
my cat is even named Octavia Butler! Is there public transportation available to the site? If not, are there any carpool opportunities from a local bus or train? Let me know what you think!
She is my favorite SCI-Fi author and from my home town of Pasadena, CA. I think this is greatDr. Letitia Wright

My goal in life is to be a writer of black queer science fiction and to teach it on a college level. Octavia Butler is a tremendous influence on my writing and thinking. Her work is significant part of my foundation as a writer and person. I am so deeply saddened by the fact that I will never get to meet her, but am comforted by the knowledge that there are people all over the world who have been just as moved by her work as I have.
If there is any way you can print all these comments and provide them to any family or dear friends that she may have present. I have read them all and past them on to my daughter and then my life partner. He is a mad crazy sci-fi lover and had never heard of her. I was wonderful seeing him devour her every word and ask for more. If you haven't read them all, do. It is worth the investment and great collections to pass on.
I truly was a dedicated reader of her well thought out novels and short stories. It amazed me how much of a creative mind that she had and was able to share it with her readers. To this day I still walk into the library hoping there one novel of hers i haven't read yet. She will be a writer that i will miss very much. To be honest she the only sci-fiction author, that i have taken a great interest in to read. God Bless us when he gave her the creative mind to share with the world.
A legend has died; I'm so upset. =( Writers of her caliber are fewer and fewer. What a blow for literature, and for me. Now I can't wait for her to come out with another book... =(
I cherish a hand written post card from Octavia Butler as she responded to a question I had for her about Kindred.
Octavia Butler's writings have had a profound effect on my life. scenes from her various books unexpectedly pop up quite often.may her missions be accomplished
What is your favorite Octavia Butler novel? I have 2. Kindred because it was my first of her novels and Wildseed because it simply blew my mind.
